Gabrielle Smith
Staff Psalmist
Gabrielle Monique Smith was born on May 26, 1985 in Greenville, N.C. to Ernest & Ora Smith. She is the youngest of fourteen children. Growing up in a large family, Gabby and her family had many challenges, but their devout Christian lifestyle has made the difference in facing those challenges as well as overcoming them. It was not easy keeping peace with unsettled circumstances, but at a young age Gabby discovered that singing gave her the sense of peace that she needed. Whether it was singing at home with her family or singing in the youth choir at church, Gabby knew that singing was her outlet.
Being born into a family of gifted singers and musicians, Gabby was pressured very early in life. She was often called up to sing solos in church and at family gatherings. Known as the little girl who loved to sing "The Blood," Gabby was forced out of timidity, which gave her the confidence to sing in front of audiences of various sizes. In 2000, Gabby, her sisters, and her dad formed a group called, Snap & New Vision. From singing at many different venues such as funerals, quartet concerts, birthday celebrations, nursing homes, and talent shows, they had many singing engagements. It was from this experience that she realized that she wanted to make singing a life-long endeavor.
Throughout the years, various artists such as the Clark Sisters, Shirley Caesar, Lashun Pace, and John P. Kee have inspired her. However, for the past two years the biggest inspiration for Gabby has been Leandria Johnson. The two have very similar styles. In 2015, Gabby accepted the opportunity of touring with Pastor John P Kee She has shared the same platform with various artists such as Pastor Shirley Caesar, Leandria Johnson, Tasha Cobbs, Dorinda Clark-Cole, Kirk Franklin, Tye Tribbett, and others. Gabby’s accomplishments include WIDU 2017 Carolina’s Best winner. She was also the recipient of The Artist of the Year/Author of the Year Award at The 2017 Melanin Awards.
Currently, Gabby is enrolled at Edgecombe Community College and is majoring in Music. Perfecting the art of singing and broadening her musical horizons is something that she takes seriously. Gabby believes that her journey is in the hands of God and recognizes that all of the glory and honor goes to Him who has allowed her to experience the richness of His blessings thus far. God has placed wonderful and caring people in her life who have always pushed her to stay driven and encouraged. Gabby believes that all things are possible to them who believe, and she believes because Christ lives within her.
