Danny Bernard West, known as “Bernard” to his family and friends, passed away on March 2, 2026, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, NC. Born to Doris Jean West and Charlie Vann, Sr. on July 22, 1953, he was 72 years old. Bernard was passionate about fishing and often visited Topsail Beach and Busco Beach.
He brought joy to family gatherings at the “trailer,” where he was known for his lively spirit and love of dancing. Bernard began his career at Calypso Plywood, later working at Mt. Olive Plywood and Carolina Turkey Plant before retiring from Georgia Pacific. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth West Faison; his parents, Doris Jean West and Charlie Vann, Sr.; his son, Roderick Leach; his brothers, Christopher West, Kenneth Earl West, Norman Ray West, and Larry West; and his sister, Mildred Kornegay.
He is survived by 3 sons: Danny Faison, Michael (Von) West, and Timothy Ashford; 4 sisters: Betty West, Sharon McCullen, Bertha Jean Johnson, and Mary Louise (Peaches) King; one God sister Elouise McDaniel; 5 brothers: Garry West, Charles Royal, Charlie Vann, Jr., Carl Frederick, and Sherwood Frederick; 1 aunt Geraldine West; 5 grandchildren: Shaquana Hairston, Jamarl Best, RayShon West, Trinity Ashford, and Zybria Ashford.
Bernard is remembered fondly by his fiancée, Phyllis Reid; his godson, Terrell Garner; special cousins Buddy and Carolyn West; close friend Linwood; four bonus daughters: Bertha Miller, Annette Leach, Sekayi Ashford, and Tameka Ashford; seven great-grandchildren; and many bonus grandchildren. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Bernard will be deeply missed by all who knew him, as he touched many lives.
