Mr. Donald Kay Artis' Obituary
Goldsboro -The Management and Staff of Williams & Ashford Funeral Directors humbly announce the earthly departure of Mr. Donald Kay Artis, 66.
Donald Kay Artis, a cherished member of the Goldsboro, NC community, proudly called Wayne County his home until his peaceful passing on June 20, 2025, at 7:13 PM at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. He was surrounded by love, with his dear sister Angie and cousin Holly by his side.
Donald began his educational journey at Friendship School in Fremont, NC, and later attended Norwayne School, ultimately graduating from C.B. Aycock High School. After his studies, he bravely enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he excelled as a cook, earning numerous accolades throughout his service. His proud accomplishments included the Good Conduct Medal, a Marksman Badge with M-16 Rifle, and an Honorable Discharge at the rank of E5, showcasing his dedication and skill. In addition to his military service, Donald embraced a vibrant professional life.
He spent his early years as a vital part of the family business, Wooten Music Company, where he earned the affectionate nickname "Big D." His strength and determination were truly remarkable—he could single-handedly maneuver a juke box, showcasing not only his physical prowess but also his unwavering dedication to getting the job done. Donald’s spirit and zest for life will forever be remembered by those who knew him.
Donald was a man of many hobbies; he enjoyed raising animals such as rabbits and pigs, farming, and hunting. Most of all, he loved cooking. Donald had a very kind and humble heart. However, if anyone bothered someone he cared about or picked on someone close to him, you’d better run because he would stand up for them! On weekends, Donald would ride alongside his brother Danny to Goldsboro and Kinston, selling ice cream and treats to kids. He enjoyed seeing the kids happy, eating ice cream, laughing, and smiling. Donald was also known for his strength in cutting down trees, a skill for which the Wooten boys are famous. He often worked alongside his brother Danny, Earl, and his dear friend Stacy. I’ve heard many stories about how Donald could throw a tree, a feat that nowadays usually requires a machine. That was Donald—big D, as we all called him.
He leaves behind cherished memories with his father, Kay Polk Wooten, brothers: William Earl Wooten of Fremont, NC; Gene Barry Wooten of Wilson, NC; and Daniel Bernard Wooten (Luna) of Fremont, NC. His sisters include Felecia M. Cooper of Smithfield, NC; Kimberly Clark of Conyers, GA; Kelly Clark of Brooklyn, NY; and Angie Wooten Hunt (Christopher) of Goldsboro, NC, as well as his son Richard Swinson.
